Funeral & Memorial Poems

1. You Never Said Goodbye

You never said I'm leaving
You never said goodbye
You were gone before I knew it,
And only God knew why
A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died
In life I loved you dearly
In death I love you still
In my heart you hold a place,
That no one could ever fill
It broke my heart to lose you,
But you didn't go alone
For part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.

2. Together Again

The rays of light filtered through
the sentinels of trees this morning.
I sat in the garden and contemplated.
The serenity and beauty of my
feelings and surroundings
completely captivated me...
I thought of you.
I discovered you tucked away in
the shadows of the trees.
Then discovered you on
the smiles of the flowers
as the sun penetrated the petals...
in the rhythm of the leaves falling
in the garden...
in the freedom of the birds
as they fly searching as you do.
I'm very happy to have found you.
Now, you will never leave me, for
I will always find you
in the beauty of life.

3. Sara's Poem

When death shall win this fight  & take me away,
Then let no person weep, for my memories shall stay.
Let it not be said that I yielded with a sigh,
Let it not be to those who know me, a good-bye.
Sorrow has followed me wither I go,
But to the world only a smile have I tried to show.
Let not my passing be sadness in an already tragic place,
But I lived life through God's glorious grace.
If in some small way I have touched a heart,
Then I pray that it will be a touch for an amazing start.
For the people I have been privileged & blessed to have known,
Then my life was not in vain for the love that they have shown.
So for myself please do not weep or mourn,
For I have prepared for my death since the day I was born.
(by Sara Haddleton)

4. Only The Best

A heart of gold stopped beating,
two shining eyes at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove,
He only takes the best.
God knows you had to leave us,
but you did not go alone,
for part of us went with you,
the day He took you home.
To some you are forgotten,
to others just part of the past,
but to us who loved and lost you,
the memory will always last.

5.  Swim Free Little Dolphin

You are so very much a part of us,
We will cherish & hold you near,
They say everything has a reason,
Even if right now its not that clear.

So when we look deep down within,
We’ll feel your strength inside.
and when we need to know your close,
We’ll feel you by our side.

So swim free our little dolphin,
In Heaven’s ocean above,
Swim free our beautiful dolphin,
With all our blessings and love.

6. Footprints

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking
along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes
from his life,
for each scene,
he noticed two sets of footprints
in the sand, one belonging to him
the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life
flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times
along the path of his life
there were only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened
at the very lowest
and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him
and he questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said that once I decided
to follow you,
you would walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed
that during the most troublesome times
in my life there is only one set of footprints.
I do not understand why when I needed you most
you would leave me?"

The Lord replied
"My precious child, I love you and
I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering
when you see only one set of footprints
it was then that I carried you.

7. A Message from Heaven

Perhaps you aren't ready yet
to have to say goodbye ...
Perhaps you thought of things
You wish you said - well so have I
For one thing, I would have told you
not to worry about me ...
I'm with the lord in heaven now
You knew that's where I'd be
I'm sorry that you're feeling said
For I'm happy now ....
I've asked the lord to ease your hurt
It's hard at the beginning<
but I know you'll make it through ...
I hope it helps to know
That I'll be waiting for you.

8.  I'm Free

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back on it all

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things, I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you sunshine for tomorrow.
My lifes been full, I savored much;
good friends, good times,
A loved ones touch.

Perhaps my time seems all to brief,
don't lengthen it with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.

9. Beyond The Rainbow's End

Beyond the rainbow's end, there lies
The land of love and light,
Where shadows never dim the skies,
For there ~~ there is no night.
And though the loss is hard to bear
Of loved one, or of friend,
We know that we shall find them there ~~
Beyond the rainbow's end.

10. God Needed You More

I walked up the stairway, to my little girl's room.
My eyes filled with tears as I opened the door.
I looked at her dollies, her toy box, and clothes.
Then, I thought how God must have needed
You more.

He took you to Heaven, just a few days ago,
And it's so hard for me to absorb.
But, I know you're with Jesus and out of your pain.
So, God must have needed
 You more.

He'll help you across His streets of pure gold
So I won't have to worry
Whose hand you will hold.

And, I know that we'll meet on God's beautiful shore.
Then, maybe, He'll tell me why He needed
You more.

11. An Angel

An angel lived among us,
A gift from God above.
She showered us with kindness
And shared with us her love.

She cherished every moment
With the man who was her life;
Walking hand in hand together,
Facing life with all its strife.

She loved her children dearly,
Each one in a different way,
Nestled close within her heart.
Though, now, she's far away.

She's gone to live with Jesus.
But, she's here with us, today,
Smiling down on every one of us,
And telling us she's O.K.

12. Something Beautiful Remains

The tide recedes but leaves behind
bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle
warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes
on in sweet refrains…..
For every joy that passes,
something beautiful remains.

13. AND GOD SAID...

I said, “God, I hurt.”
And God said,
“I know”.

I said, “God, I cry a lot.”
And God said,
“That is why I gave you tears.”

I said, “God, I am so depressed.”
And God said,
“That is why I gave you sunshine.”

I said, “God, life is so hard.”
And God said,
“That is why I gave you loved ones.”

I said, “God, my loved one died.”
And God said,
“So did mine.”

I said, “God, it is such a loss.”
And God said,
“I saw mine nailed to a cross.”

I said, “God, but your loved one lives.”
And God said,
“So does yours.”

I said, “God, where are they now?”
And God said,
“Mine is on my right and yours is in the Light.”

I said, “God it hurts.”
And God said,
“I know.”

14. Message to a Son

Hello Son, are you alright?
Can you hear me where you are?
I'm looking up for you tonight
And loving you from afar.

Although the stars are bright,
One star outshines the others,
I know that's it's your heavenly light
Shining on me, your loving Mother.

I would just like to say, "I love you son"
And I miss you everyday,
I hope you hear my prayers at night
While on my knees I pray.

I know that where you are
God will look after you,
And even though you’ve just arrived,
He'll guide you in what you do.

I'll look up for you every single night
And the star won't leave my eyes,
You light up the entire universe
As your smile illuminates the skies.

Forgive me dear, if my words are choked
Or if a tear should suddenly start,
Because I just want to tell you son
You're forever in my heart...

15. ~Please~

Please, don't ask me if I am over it.
I will never be over it!
Please, don't tell me he is in a better place.
He isn't here with me!
Please, don't tell me he isn't suffering.
I haven't come to terms with why
he had to suffer at all.
Please, don't ask me if I feel better.
For bereavement isn't a condition that clears up.
Please, don't tell me,
At least you had him for so many years.
What year would you choose for your loved one to die?
Please, don't ever tell me that,
God doesn't give us more then we can handle.
Please, just say you are sorry.
Please, just say that you remember him.
Please, just talk to me about him.
Please, just mention his name.
Please, just let me cry.

16.  My Easter Wish List

Dear Mr. Easter Bunny,
I just had to write today…
To ask you please to stop in Heaven
Before you hop along your way.

I wanted to know if you’d come here,
and if I could ask a favour of you.
Can you bring a basket to Heaven
so I may add some goodies too?

I need to send my love to Mum
She’s terribly sad you see,
Please give my Mum a bunny hug
And tell her it’s from me.

Mr. Bunny, could you tell my Dad
That I’m sending all my love.
Please tell him that I’m smiling down
From my home in Heaven above.

Please give my Nans and Pops
A tender loving touch,
I’ll send a big wet kiss for them
‘Cos they are loved so much.

My cousins need to know I’m there
When they go out to play,
I’ll send to them some tickles
To brighten up their day.

My Aunties and my Uncles
Will also need some care.
Please give them each a loving hug,
To let them know I’m there.

Mr. Bunny, there are many more
On my Easter wishes list,
So let them know on Easter morn
They’ve each been dearly kissed.

Please tell them all I love them
And I’m with them everyday.
I’ll hold their hands ‘til it’s their turn
to come on up my way.

Thank you Mr. Easter Bunny…
I appreciate you coming this way.
I will say a loving prayer for you
As you hop from Heaven on Easter day.

17. My First Christmas In Heaven

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below
With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars, reflecting on the snow
The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear
For I am spending Christmas with the angels this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear
But the sounds of music can't compare with the Choir up here.

I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing.
I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart
But I am not so far away, We really aren't apart.
So be happy for me, dear ones, You know I hold you dear.
And be glad I'm spending Christmas with the angels this year.

I sent you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above.
I sent you each a memory of my undying love.
After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold.
Please love and keep each other, as our Maker said to do.
For I can't count the blessings he has for each of you.

So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear
Remember, I am spending Christmas with the angels this year.

18. MASTER'S BOUQUET

The Master walked in His garden
Plucking flowers along the way;
He plucked one of my loved ones,
To add to his bouquet.
My heart at first was broken,
At the loss of one so dear;
But the tears I shed just washed my eyes,
So I saw His way more clear.
My Lord has a need for just this one,
For the pattern He has in mind;
But it's hard for the rest of us to see
Why we must be left behind.
Perhaps we are not ready to go just yet
We may need to ripen more
To reach the full blown fragrance
My Lord is waiting for.
To each, give forth a fragrance
To each we chance to meet
We should each be trying day by day
To make our fragrance sweet.
So I'm going to try my very best
To be loving and kind each day,
So at last I'll be counted worthy
To be part of my Master's Bouquet.
